Do I qualify to hire a caregiver?
Canada’s live-in caregiver program is restricted to those who meet certain guidelines and conditions. Because the employer need not be the person or persons receiving care, you may apply on behalf of a relative or dependant. The definition of a live-in caregiver is "A person who resides in and provides child care, senior home support care and care of the disabled without supervision in the private household in Canada where the person being cared for resides."
Conditions for hiring a live-in senior caregiver:
- The person receiving care must be at least 65 years of age, or be a person with a disability
- The senior caregiver must live in the home of the person receiving care
- The employer must provide the senior caregiver with a furnished room of their own
- The senior caregiver may not work for more than one employer
To qualify for a nanny:
- At least one child under the care of the nanny must be under the age of 18 years old
- The nanny must live in the employer's home
- The employer must provide the nanny with a furnished room of their own
- The nanny may not work for more than one employer
