SENIOR CARE OPTION COMPARISON
(Excluding non-profit and subsidized housing)
SUPPORTIVE LIVING
Live-in Caregiver ($)
For individuals who require care support but wish to remain in their homes. Most do not require 24-hour personal care support.
- The Senior and caregiver live in the home.
- Services offered are: Assistance with bathing, meals, dressing and mobility if required; companionship; accompaniment outside of home; medication reminders; light housekeeping/laundry; meal preparation assistance and general personal care.
- Senior pays Caregiver, and provides room and board.
Private Supportive Living ($$ - $$$)
For residents who no longer wish to live at home and can manage their own self-care including dressing, taking medication and getting to meals without assistance.
- Studio, 1 bedroom and in some facilities 2 bedroom apartment style suites are available. Most suites have a modified kitchen. (cupboards, sink, microwave, bar fridge).
- Basic services offered are: meals in a common dining room, snacks, housekeeping, linen service, social activities and bus service for appointments. May offer other services including library, activity rooms, etc.
- Resident pays for room & board, plus personal expenses and other services as required.
Personal Care Homes ($)
For qualifying individuals who may have care support needs resulting from mental illness, brain injury, dementia, physical disability or a combination of these conditions.
- Privately operated residences that have been built or renovated to provide a homelike atmosphere for adults.
- Bedroom with attached bathroom.
- Services offered are: meals, snacks, housekeeping, 24-hour staffing.
- Resident pays for room & board plus personal expenses, Health Authority pays for support services.
ASSISTED LIVING
Designated Assisted Living ($ - $$)
For qualifying individuals who require 24-hour personal care support, occasional and scheduled professional care, can no longer live in their home even with support services, and benefit from living in a group setting.
- Designated facilities have contractual arrangement with Health Authority.
- Services offered are: 24-hour personal care to help with bathing, meals and dressing, 24-hour access to an on-call registered nurse and a Home Care nurse if the client is receiving care on an ongoing basis.
- Resident pays for room & board plus personal expenses, Health Authority pays for support services.
Long-Term Care Centres ($)
Housing and health care for qualifying individuals whose care exceeds the amount of support available in the community or in other types of housing due to chronic illness or other medical conditions.
- Services offered are: 24-hour nursing and personal care, physio, occupational and recreational therapy, social services and pastoral counseling, pharmacy services and oxygen therapy. Some centres have services such as rehabilitation, palliative care, stroke recovery or dementia care.
- Private or shared bath, meals and snacks, personal care, nursing, medication supervision and social activities.
- Resident pays for room & board plus personal expenses, Health Authority pays for support services.

- The average rent for a standard retirement home unit was $2,334 per month in Alberta in 2009.
- The standard two-bedroom+ unit rented for $2,900 per month in Alberta.
- In Alberta, the average rent for a heavy care space was $3,403 per month. A Heavy Care space is a unit in a residence that provides the resident with more than 1.5 hours of heath care per day.
